Whoaaa I just realized I’ve been neglecting this blog for more than a year! I believe my last post was back in April, 2010….Holy cow! Well, it’s not like I haven’t watched a lot of movies, I actually have and have probably seen way too many movies since my last posting. I don’t think I’d be able to catch up with the writing if I had to write a review for every single movie that I’ve seen the past 12+ months.

Anyways, this past few days I’ve been trying to find some good Indonesian movies. Good things about Indonesian movies are they’re not too heavy (meaning it’s more like pop-corn type of movie, easy to digest) and the good guys always win. Oh and also, they’re free (thanks to YouTube). The only problem that I have now is to find a really good Indonesian movie. To be honest with you, I don’t really keep up with Indonesian movie industry at all. Too much drama..more drama than Hollywood, I’d say. So for me to find the latest Indo movies, I really have to depend so much on YouTube. The weird thing is, so far the ones that I’ve found are Indo horror movies. Somehow people are starting to obsess with horror movies, so the studios are trying to feed the masses by making as many horror movies as they could. The result is we now have a bunch of really bad quality horror movies that don’t even make any sense whatsoever!

Here are some of the ones that I’ve found recently:

Anak Setan (Satan’s Child or maybe Evil Kid – really depends on the context of the movie)

Arwah Goyang Karawang (The Karawang Move Spirit – honestly I don’t how to properly translate “Goyang Karawang”. I think it’s some sort of traditional dance move)

Dedemit Gunung Kidul (The Kidul Mountain Big-Fat Ghost – I think that’s the correct way to translate “Dedemit.” They say “Dedemit” is some type of a ghost, only bigger and fatter)

Dikejar Setan (Chased by the Ghost)

Hantu Biang Kerok (The Troublemaker Ghost – What the hell….?)

Hantu Binal Jembatan Semanggi (The Semanggi Bridge Slutty Ghost – this is even worse)

Hantu Puncak Datang Bulan (The Menstruated Peak Ghost – never knew ghosts could menstruate, too)

Jeritan Kuntilanak (The Screaming Female Ghost)

Kuntilanak Kamar Mayat (The Mortuary Female Ghost)

Kuntilanak 2 (The Female Ghost 2)

Kuntilanak 3 (The Female Ghost 3 – OK seriously, I don’t know what the obsession is with this female ghost. They even made the sequels and spin-offs of these female ghost movies…my God)

Dendam Kuntilanak (The Revenge of Female Ghost – oh here’s another one)

And last but not least, the Pocong series:

Pocong Jum’at Kliwon

Pocong Kamar Sebelah

Pocong Keliling

Pocong Ngesot

Pocong Rumah Angker

Pocong Setan Jompo

Pocong 2

Pocong 3

I honestly don’t know how to translate “pocong” in English. Pocong is basically the soul of dead guy trapped in their suit – which happens to be shroud. They cover the dead body with white fabric and tie the clothing over the head, under the feet, and on the neck, and that’s what “pocong” looks like. Somehow any movies about pocong always make so much money in the box office, and that’s the sole reason why the Indo filmmakers keep making movies about pocong…in addition to “kuntilanak”, the female ghost.

Look, I always enjoy watching all DiCaprio’s movies. Starting from the one that he did years ago with Johnny Depp – I believe he was playing as a retard (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), then the ones where he played as a druggie (The Basketball Diaries), a guy who’s romantically involved with some rich spoiled brat in a sinking ship (Titanic), a funny-lookin’ royal prince who turns out to have a twin brother who’s been locked up in a dungeon (The Man in The Iron Mask), a lazy-ass bum who spends countless hours getting tanned in some beach near marijuana farm in Thailand (The Beach), an Irish guy with a silly Irish accent (Gangs of New York), a con man who likes to dress up as a pilot (Catch Me If You Can), a filthy-rich guy with a bad case of OCD (The Aviator) and a South-African guy with a funny accent who’s been after a huge-ass diamond all over Africa (Blood Diamond).

So anyways, he was reunited again with Kate Winslet in this movie which I believe was based on a book, and was directed by Sam Mendes, the guy who directed in American Beauty and Road to Perdition. I was like, okay DiCaprio was in it and the director was actually a great director. Kate Winslet was okay, I’m not so much into British chicks (except for Kate Beckinsale), but whatever. I thought as long as DiCaprio was in it, everything would be fine. So I decided to get it from Netflix.

Revolutionary Road is a story about a young couple, Frank and April Wheeler who lives in the Connecticut suburbs in 1955. Everyday Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job; a job that he despises with passion, while April stays home as a housewife. April has given up her dream of becoming an actress and Frank, well in addition to hating his job, he feels he hasn’t really figured out what his passion in life is. Until one day, April suggests that they should move to Paris – a city where Frank visited during the war and loved, but where April has never been – in order to rejuvenate their life. However, things happen later on which make Frank become skeptical with the whole plan.

Frankly, I honestly think this story should’ve not been made into a movie. It’s too freakin’ depressing! I think it should’ve been made into a Broadway play instead since it would’ve shown the strong acting performances and the story. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good movie.. But I just thought it would’ve been much better if it were turned into a play. Every minute I spent watching this movie, I felt I was dying inside and feeling so miserable.. Just as I finished watching it, I felt so bad I wanted to eat two gallons of ice cream and four scoops of guacamole. I did love their acting/performances though. The actors have done a great job in this movie. Too bad it wasn’t a happy ending.

Ahh.. If it isn’t another big-budget disaster movie. Lots of explosions, earthquake, flood (a huge one!), cars hitting one another and flipping over in the middle of the road, volcanic explosions, buildings crashing down, etc.. Of course as usual, the main characters are able to get away without any injuries whatsoever.

To be honest with you, I knew this movie was gonna be pretty bad when I saw the trailer for the first time. I mean, I knew the plot was gonna be the same as Independence Day, The Core, Deep Impact and Armageddon (OK I kinda like the last one though because it had a great soundtrack and Liv Tyler was pretty hot in that movie). Amanda Peet looked pretty damn old and Woody Harrelson was literally annoying in the movie. He was playing as an underground radio dj who broadcasted his show from his trailer, and his show revolved around how the world was going to end in 2012. Stupid thing was, when the mountains started erupting, do you know what he did? He carried all his broadcasting instruments with him and he went all the way up the hill and started broadcasting from there – telling everyone how beautiful it was to see the ground started shaking and cracking, the mountains started erupting and lava spilling out of them, etc. Seriously.. WTF?!

Not to mention, when everyone clearly knew the world was ending and the great flood was coming to wipe them out, the US President – instead of evacuating to some high-tech vessel which was supposedly built to save humanity (only a handful was allowed to come on board; they charged 1 billion Euros/person for civilians and FREE for government officials) chose to remain in his post, the White House. Come one, dude… The great flood was coming and you decided to do something heroic by refusing to abandon your post and chose to stay with your people? Meanwhile, all the other presidents were happily to come on board on their own vessels.. Aww come on, Mr. President!

As usual, all the main characters – in the midst of explosions, earthquake and great flood, they were able to escape and remain uninjured throughout the entire movie, aaaaand had a chance to get on board without paying 1 billion Euros. Pftttt.. That’s just so Hollywood.
